FameEX Hot Topics | YouGov survey: Crypto holdings among UK adults drop to 8% this year

A recent YouGov poll, commissioned by the UK's Financial Conduct Authority (FCA), shows a significant decline in cryptocurrency ownership among British adults. In 2025, only 8% reported holding crypto assets, down from 12% in 2024. Based on 2,353 interviews from August 5 to September 2, the survey suggests fewer new entrants, though public awareness of crypto stands strong at 91%.

While overall participation has fallen, existing holders are investing more substantially. The FCA notes a persistent shift: small-value portfolios are shrinking, while larger ones expand. Notably, 21% of owners hold £1,000–£5,000 (approx. $1,343–$6,708), and 11% hold £5,001–£10,000 ($6,709–$13,416). Investors are increasingly favoring bigger commitments, with those in lending/borrowing showing greater knowledge, risk tolerance, and awareness of warnings.

Among holders, Bitcoin leads with 57% ownership, followed by Ethereum at 43%. This focus on established assets points to a maturing market dominated by experienced users.

The poll coincided with the FCA's launch of three key consultations on crypto rules, addressing exchanges, staking, lending, borrowing, market abuse, disclosures, and DeFi. Feedback is due by February 2026, supporting the government's aim for a full regulatory framework by 2027 that protects consumers while fostering innovation.
